2016-årgangen er utvilsomt en av de fineste for California Cabernet Sauvignon de siste to tiårene, skriver Matthew Luczy . En relativt rolig vekstsesong ga viner som utstråler kraft, nyanse og presisjon. Modning og innhøsting skjedde i bølger, og etterlot produsentene luksusen med spillerom for å velge.
Avkastningen var i gjennomsnitt lavere, hovedsakelig på grunn av den pågående tørken som begynte i 2012, selv om denne årgangen ville markere slutten.
En varm, tørr vinter holdt frost i sjakk og akselererte budbreak. Vårtemperaturen var også varm, noe som satte vinprodusenter i et lignende frirom som i 2015. Mens den tidlige delen av sommeren var moderat varm, avkjølte august seg kraftig - en sterk avvik fra året før. Dette tillot utvidet hangtime og redusert modenhet, noe som gir vinene friskhet og livskraft.

September ga høyere temperaturer og jevn vær under høstingen. Midt i oktober leverte noe av det kraftigste regnet på flere tiår, men mest plukking var allerede fullført. Drueklynger var betydelig mer sunne og konsistente enn i 2015 da varmepigger ved høsting forårsaket brente bunter og flekkete viner for noen produsenter.
